EXPANDED LEARNING AIDE
Entry Level Position, Part-time

SUMMARY

Expanded Learning Aide assists the program instructor for an individual class in the direct care and supervision of the children and maintains program standards.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Works under direct supervision of the class Instructor or Lead Instructor.  Follows well defined guidelines, policies and written procedures.  Exercises patience, tolerance and objectivity when working with individuals or groups of children.  Uses judgment to determine children's needs and when to seek assistance from Instructor or other staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry level position in the Expanded Learning instructional series.  Advancement is possible along the instructional or supervisory track but will require additional formal classes, training and experience as defined by State regulations.  May qualify for the Instructional Assistant career ladder.

ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES

• Works with Instructor to implement lesson plans by providing positive learning experiences for children.
• Assists the Instructor in maintaining classroom discipline and order by observing the activities of the children.
• Gives each child individual and special attention.  Responds to each child's particular needs and characteristics.  Ensure that all children receive equal attention.
• Assists Instructor with attendance.  Phone individual parents regarding child's attendance.
• Reports to the Instructor any signs of illness or distress observed in the children.  Aids in dealing with situations, as appropriate.
• Sets up and arranges supplies and equipment in the classroom as directed.
• Prepares teaching aids, labels, charts, bulletin boards and displays as instructed.
• Helps to ensure that program policies and procedures are followed at the school site.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills:  Requires a basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices and an understanding of the goals and objectives of the Expanded Learning program.  Knowledge of arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading sufficient to assist students with homework or other projects is required.  Requires good communication skills to interact with students, staff and parents.  General knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping processes is necessary.

Abilities:  Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position.  Demonstrates ability to understand and interpret Instructor's instructions in order to assist in instruction of children.  Ability to understand the needs and differences of the children and to reach and motivate them.  Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems.  Ability to perform clerical and classroom support duties with minimal supervision.  Work is performed in a classroom setting, presenting minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.  Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and student.  Requires visual acuity to read numbers and words. 

Education and Experience:  Must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED required.  Preferred experience working with children.

EXPANDED LEARNING INSTRUCTOR
Entry Level Position, Part-time

SUMMARY

Is responsible for implementation of all elements of the Expanded Learning program for a single class of students.  Creates and presents a learning environment that develops mental, social and motor skills.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Work is performed under the guidance of a Lead Instructor, Expanded Learning Site Supervisor or Expanded Learning Coordinator. Exercises a moderate degree of independent judgement and decision making to implement program elements which have been well defined in the Program Development Handbook.  Job requires patience, tolerance and objectivity when interacting with children.  Work relationships extend to other program staff, school faculty and parents.  May exercise supervision over Expanded Learning Aides in routine classroom matters.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Instructors are required to have a combination of college level classes and training sufficient to meet State established standards.  Advancement to Expanded Learning or Child Development supervisory positions, including Lead Instructor, will require additional college level classes, degree and/or certification in the area of child development specifically defined by position.

ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES

• Implements the site program under the guidance of the Lead Instructor and/or Site Supervisor.
• Performs a wide variety of teaching duties including creating lesson plans, developing teaching strategies, implementing instruction, evaluating students needs and providing emotional stability.
• Communicates program needs to Lead Instructor and/or Site Supervisor.
• Acts as a liaison between the on-site Expanded Learning Program and school principal.
• Communicates with parents regarding the program and the progress and individual needs of their child.
• Completes lesson plans and turns them in monthly.  Plans are meaningful and fun, and set to develop mental, social and motor skills of the students.
• Completes daily attendance and record keeping procedures.
• Completes additional assignments as given by the Expanded Learning Coordinator, Site Supervisor, or Lead Instructor necessary to maintain a quality program.
• Supervises Expanded Learning Aide by observing, interacting with and counseling as needed.
• Supervise students, ensuring safety and protection during all inside and outdoor activities.
• Responsible for program and department policies and procedures as described in the Child Development Employee and Program Development Handbooks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills:  Requires knowledge of child development practices and principles and the practices and principles of program and lesson plan development for elementary school age children.  Must have a thorough understanding of the operations of the Child Development and Expanded Learning programs.  Requires knowledge of the procedures, methods and techniques of developing recreational and entertainment activities for elementary school age children.  Must have strong organizational, planning prioritizing skills.  Requires strong teaching and communication skills.

Abilities: Must be able to perform all of the duties of the position with only general supervision.  Requires the ability to plan and implement educational and recreational programs by age group and grade level.  Must be able to participate in the supervision of the Instructional Aides.  Must be able to understand and respond to the needs of individual children.  Must be able to communicate with program staff, site staff/administration and parents.  Requires the ability to perform general clerical and record keeping skills.  Majority of work is performed in a classroom setting, presenting minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.  Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.  Requires visual acuity to read numbers and words.

Education and Experience:  Must meet one of the following requirements:

1. Have earned at least 12 college units in Child Development, Early Childhood Education or other related field with emphasis on elementary age children as delineated in a board approved college course list; and have at least six months experience in a school-age enrichment program or child care setting.
2. Hold a current Children's Center Permit (Instructional, Supervisory or Emergency).

EXPANDED LEARNING LEAD INSTRUCTOR
In House Eligible Only, Part-time

Manages an entire school site which meets the following criteria:

• 10-65 students enrolled in the after-school program.
• Supervises one or more staff.
• Coordinates before school, kindergarten, and after-school programs.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Expanded Learning Site Supervisor or Campus Club Coordinator, this position is responsible for the implementation of the entire program at the school site level.  Duties include personnel management, parent communication, newsletter production, scheduling, attendance, delivery of program and safety issues.  Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at the school site.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Expanded Learning Lead Instructor I may advance to Lead Instructor II or with additional experience and education to the Level of Program Supervisor.

• Acts as a liaison between the on-site Expanded Learning Program and school principal.

• Oversees the implementation of effective curriculum through lesson planning and instructional strategies.
• Provides leadership for all Expanded Learning site programs and conducts on-site meetings with Instructors and Aides.
• Participates in a program of professional growth.
• Assists in completing Performance Reports for the site's Instructional Aides and Casual Labor.
• Completes additional assignments related to the school-age program as requested by the Expanded Learning Coordinator and/or Program Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
