Substitute General Information

Find information regarding sick leave and the payment schedule for substitutes.

  • Substitute Sick Time
    Substitutes earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

    Substitutes may use 40 hours or 5 days of sick leave per fiscal year.

    Sick Leave balances can be viewed in Employee Self-Service.

  • Substitute Payment Schedule

    Substitutes are paid based on substitute jobs entered through SmartFind Express (SFE).

    The pay period for all substitutes runs from the 6th to the 5th of the following month.

    Example: Time worked 11/6 through 12/5 is paid on the 12/31 pay date.

    Paystubs are available through Employee Self Service (ESS) "Pay/Tax Information" section.

Substitute Teacher Qualifications and Application Process

Please review the information below to understand the requirements for applying to the substitute teacher eligibility pool for Clovis Unified School District.

Qualifications

All substitute teachers must possess either a 30-day Sub Permit or a regular California Credential to work in this role. To qualify for a 30-day Sub Permit, candidates need to have a completed bachelor's degree.

Applications for credentials and permits are processed through the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools. Don’t have a bachelor’s degree? If you have earned at least 90 units and are currently enrolled to earn your bachelor's degree, you may qualify for a Prospective Teacher Substitute Permit. Click Here for More Information.

Required Documents

The following documents must be attached to your Substitute Teacher Application:

• Current 30-day Sub Permit or California Credential

• Transcripts with a posted bachelor’s degree (unofficial is accepted)

• Current Resume

• Letter of Recommendation from the Professional/Educational field. (Must be dated within 18 months of application date)

Substitute Teacher Pay

• Substitute Teachers are paid $165 per day and $82.50 for a half-day assignment (3.5 hours or less)

• Long-term substitute positions are compensated at a rate of $175 per day when they work 11 or more consecutive days in the same classroom.

 

Application Process

Applications for Substitute Teacher positions at Clovis Unified School District are accepted through Edjoin.com during the open Substitute Teacher Eligibility Pool.

  • To be considered for an interview, applicants must attach all required documents to their application.
  • Interviews will be conducted over the phone.

    1. Once your substitute permit is processed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), please proceed to apply for the substitute teacher application for Clovis Unified.

    All inquiries regarding your application permit should be directed to the Fresno County Office of Education.

  • No, CUSD does not process any substitute permits. 

    All substitute permit requests must be processed through the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS) or the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).  


    FCSS can also process Prospective Teacher Substitute Permits for applicants who have completed at least 90 college units.  

  • Fingerprint clearance through the CTC is necessary for all new Substitute Teaching Permits, even if you have previously been fingerprinted for different roles or districts. 

  • Yes, these are distinct entities, each requiring separate clearance. 

    Clearance details are sent directly to the requesting agency and are not shared with other districts or organizations. 

    Due to legal restrictions and confidentiality regarding criminal history information, each employer must obtain its clearance. 

  • Applicants who have not completed a bachelor's degree may qualify for a Prospective Teaching Permit if they meet the following qualifications:  

    • Completion of 90 semester units  

    • Current enrollment at a 4-year California University  

    Current CUSD Employees: If you are a current CUSD employee and believe you qualify for the prospective substitute permit, please contact Breanna Savage at breannasavage@clovisusd.k12.ca.us. You do NOT need to go through the county office.  

    If you are not a current employee, please complete your application through the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS).

  • Yes, FCSS requires fingerprint clearance to issue a substitute permit or credential, which is separate from the clearance required for a district.

  • Following submission of your complete application, a representative from Human Resources will conduct a review.

    If your application is selected, you will be contacted with further instructions. 

    Submission of an application does not guarantee you a position with Clovis Unified. 

    Due to increased application volume at the start of the school year, processing times may be longer than usual.  Your patience during the review process is greatly appreciated.
