CPR, AED, & First Aid
CPR, AED, and First Aid Training
Clovis Unified School District provides several opportunities throughout the year for employees/coaches & volunteers to receive initial training and/or recertification in Adult-Only CPR, AED, and First Aid at no cost to the participant. Adult-Only CPR, AED, and First Aid covers materials that apply to individuals 8-years-old & older.
There are six certification classes held over the calendar year, with five held during the school year & one held during the summer. An additional two days of “Skills Only” testing takes place over the summer. Certified instructors provide all the trainings for the year & conduct hands-on skills testing for each trainee during the certification & recertification process.
If for some reason an employee/coach or volunteer is unable to attend a CUSD training or would prefer to complete training elsewhere, they must receive training from an approved, hands-on program that covers all three training areas of Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid. Trainings that do not meet those qualifications can be deemed insufficient & may require additional training to satisfy District standards. The cost of the non-CUSD CPR training is the responsibility of the individual obtaining the training.
To request training and/or start the training process, please route to the Risk Management CPR, AED, and First Aid Training Form. All steps of the training process will be completed through that form, including certificate issuance. For more details on how this training process works, please review the “Training Form FAQs & Breakdown” under our Resources section.
To confirm if an outside program is accepted by CUSD & for other inquiries, please contact our Risk Management Specialist, Carly Regehr, via email at CarlyRegehr@cusd.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Per the CA Department of Education, teaching credential students are required to receive certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid. CUSD does not offer a certification that satisfies these requirements.
If an employee/coach needs a certification for their credential and for coaching, they will need to take a class through an outside agency that meets the following requirements:
- Course must be conducted through an organization certified to issue CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, such as American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or CPR Fresno
- Course must cover all three skills (CPR, AED, and First Aid) for at least Adults (individuals 8 years old or older)
- Course must provide hands-on, in-person skills testing of all three skills prior to issuing a certification card
-
The Risk Management CPR program is not involved in issuing certifications for aquatics coaches. You would need to reach out to Kacy Ota directly for details on training.
-
Child Development has their own CPR training program that is managed through their own department; their training covers Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, and First Aid, which is a different certification than what the Risk Management Office offers.
Please reach out to your supervisor directly for information on how to sign up for CPR training through Child Development.
-
Please fill out a CPR, AED, and First Aid Training Form to start the training process. All steps of the training process will be completed through that form, including certificate issuance, so initiate the form with an email that you check often to avoid missing important communications.
-
Employees, coaches, and volunteers have the option to receive certifications from an approved program outside of the District at their own expense.
There are some local programs in the Fresno/Clovis Area that offer training that meets CUSD standards, but there are specific requirements that an organization/course must meet:
- Course must be conducted through an organization certified to issue CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, such as American Red Cross.
- Course must cover all three skills (CPR, AED, and First Aid) for at least Adults (individuals 8 years old or older)
- Course must provide hands-on, in-person skills testing of all three skills prior to issuing a certification card.
COACHES: You will still need to complete the additional training requirements for concussion, sudden cardiac arrest, and heat illness prevention.
-
The most common reasons a certification from an outside agency would be denied:
- Online Only Training with No Hands On Skills Testing: Per OSHA regulations, CPR, AED, and First Aid training must include hands-on skills testing.
- Missing a Required Skill: All three life saving skills – CPR, AED, and First Aid – were missing from the training.
- Certification is expired beyond 6 months: A certification is no longer valid after 6 months & a new certification class is required in order to become certified again.
-
No – employees must complete the hiring process & be cleared to work by Human Resources prior to being enrolled.
-
Yes, but volunteers must complete a background check & be cleared by Human Resources prior to signing up for a CPR, AED, and First Aid class.
